Machu Picchu: A Journey through Circuits 1 and 2
Visiting Machu Picchu also means deciding from where you want to discover it.
You can admire the Inca city among the mountains from the high terraces or walk through its plazas and structures. Circuit 1 brings together four panoramic routes; Circuit 2 features two paths that allow you to venture into sectors of the llaqta. Knowing their differences will help you plan a visit that matches the experience you envision.
Circuit 1: Machu Picchu from Above
From the upper terraces, the stone platforms and buildings stand out among the mountains. It is a perspective that allows you to appreciate the relationship between the Inca city and the landscape where it was built. The four routes in this circuit start from that panoramic view, but each offers a different journey.
Route 1-B, Upper Terrace
Is dedicated to taking in the archaeological complex from above. It is an alternative for those who wish to pause and admire one of the most recognizable views of Machu Picchu without hiking to other points of the sanctuary.
Route 1-A, Machu Picchu Mountain
Adds the ascent of the mountain. As the hike progresses, the city falls further below, and a broader perspective of the surroundings opens up. This option requires good physical condition and time to complete the journey at a suitable pace.
During the high season, two other routes become available. Route 1-C leads to the Intipunku Sun Gate, linked to the arrival via the Inca Trail. Route 1-D heads to the Inca Bridge, via a trail that reveals how the Incas carved paths into steep geography. Both add a hike to the panoramic experience and are subject to the dates they are available.
Circuit 2: Through the spaces of the Inca city
In Circuit 2, the visit goes beyond the general views. The path goes through sectors of the llaqta, allowing you to observe the layout of its plazas, terraces, and structures. With a guide's explanation, the spaces seen along the way gain context and connect with the history of the site.
Route 2-A
Follows a classic layout. Its official map points out, among its points of interest, the platforms, the Temple of the Sun viewpoint, the Temple Plaza, the Intiwatana pyramid, and the Sacred Rock. Each stop offers an opportunity to observe how the architecture adapted to the terrain.
Route 2-B, Lower Terrace
Also combines a view of the complex with a walk through urban areas. Its access path is different, although it shares several points of interest with 2-A. Therefore, it is important to check the route map on your ticket: belonging to the same circuit does not mean following the exact same path.
A visit that begins before you arrive
Each path leaves a distinct impression of Machu Picchu. It could be the vastness of the mountains viewed from a terrace, the arrival at Intipunku after a hike, or the moment you walk between the walls of the Inca city.
